ABOUT TRANSLATIONAL NEUROSCIENCE LABORATORY

The research in our laboratory is directed towards comprehending the molecular and cellular mechanisms of behaviors and developing “treatment delivery systems” for translating cutting-edge basic science findings into clinical benefits. The Howard University Translational Neuroscience Laboratory is a truly collaborative effort, where transformative science supersedes departmental disciplines. This is reflected in the diverse expertise working together to solve difficult scientific problems. We are especially interested in understanding how environmental exposures, such as odorant molecules, effect temporary and lasting changes in neuronal connections and functions.

We are actively investigating how neurons can be stimulated to repair damaged circuits in several psychiatric and neurological diseases. Additionally, we are studying the mechanisms by which pathogens interact with the human immune system to alter neuronal functions.

Our research examines a broad area of neuroscience inquiry, which includes:

• Psychophysical, biochemical, genomic and proteomic investigations in olfactory tissue of living patients with mood disorders, schizophrenia, alcohol and substance dependence, and neurodegenerative diseases.
• Biological basis of variations in cognitive and olfactory functions across populations.
• Electrophysiological markers of behaviors, including decision making, impulsivity, and their interactions with emotion.
• Mechanisms of HIV-1 mediated neuronal injuries.
• Discovery and development of novel therapies for CNS neuropsychiatric diseases
• Fabrication of devices for CNS treatment delivery
